Fox News commentators have attacked the Dodd-Frank financial regulation law by falsely suggesting that it doesn't address oil speculation. In fact, Dodd-Frank does address speculation, and regulations on oil speculation have been issued. However, financial industry groups are suing to block them.

Fox Attacks Efforts To Make The Rich Pay Their Fair Share In Taxes
Senate Republicans Block Legislation To Implement The Buffett Rule And Ensure The Rich Pay Their Fair Share. On April 16, a majority of senators voted in favor of legislation that would set a minimum effective tax rate for annual income in excess of $1 million. But Senate Republicans blocked the legislation with a filibuster. [Senate vote 65, 4/16/12]
On Fox, Krauthammer Said The Buffett Rule Is A "Gimmick" That "Won't Expand The Economy Or Spur Economic Growth." Media personalities on Fox have repeatedly attacked the legislation at issue. For instance, on the April 16 edition of Fox News' Special Report with Bret Baier, Charles Krauthammer dismissed the legislation as a "gimmick":
BRET BAIER: I think we are at a consens...

The United States Postal Service is not broke.
It does not need to be downsized. Post offices do not need to be closed. Sorting centers do not need to be shuttered. Saturday service does not need to be scrapped. And hundreds of thousands of jobs in rural regions and urban neighborhoods do not need to be cut in a time of economic instability.
Yet, this week, the US Senate is debating about whether to advance a scheme that would begin a process of downsizing that—while not so immediately draconian as the plan advanced by House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chairman Darrel Issa (R-CA)—accepts the notion that the postal service's future is one of closures and cuts. Ultimately, that downsizing points the postal in a direction where privatization could be inevitable.
But that d...

JACKSONVILLE, Florida — Prosecutors Wednesday charged a neighborhood watch guard with second-degree murder in the killing of an unarmed US black teenager that sparked nationwide anger amid suspicions it was racially motivated.
“Today, we filed an information charging George Zimmerman with murder in the second degree,” Florida state attorney general Angela Corey told a press conference.
“I can tell you, we did not come to this decision lightly,” she added after a weeks-long investigation into the February death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
Zimmerman, who is Hispanic, is accused in the fatal shooting of Martin during an altercation inside a gated community in the central Florida town of Sanford.
Corey also confirmed that Zim...

I’ve made an important decision that I’d like to share with you all. No longer will I refer to the morally bankrupt hypocritical obstructionists on the right as the GOP, the Republican party, the religious right, or the Teabaggers (OK, I’ll still use THAT one).
I’ve given the whole lot of them a new name – The Boat Anchor Party.
You may wonder why I chose to tarnish the image of a poor, defenseless boat anchor, something that reliably does its job, by associating it with the morons on the right. Well, let me give you some insight. I liken the regressive right to a boat anchor tied to the ankles of the country, keeping it from doing anything but barely keeping its head above water, if that. Urban Dictionary offers up an amusing definition of the term “boat anchor” that fits:
One who exhi...

Police surveillance video obtained by ABC News shows no blood or bruises on George Zimmerman, who allegedly shot and killed Florida teenager Trayvon Martin. The video puts Zimmerman’s account of events into question.
The video shows Zimmerman arriving at the Sanford Police Department in a police cruiser.
Zimmerman told police last month that he had followed Martin on foot, but eventually lost sight of Trayvon and turned around to walk back to his SUV. That is when, according to Zimmerman’s account, Martin approached him from behind and confronted him.
Zimmerman said that Martin punched him in the nose, knocking him down, and then began banging his head into the ground. That is when Zimmerman allegedly shot Martin.
The initial po...

Over the last 48 hours, there has been a sustained effort to smear Trayvon Martin, the 17-year old African-American who was shot dead by George Zimmerman a month ago. Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, said, “They killed my son, now they’re trying to kill his reputation.”
Thus far these attacks have fallen into two categories: false and irrelevant. Much of this leaked information seems intended to play into stereotypes about young African-American males. Here’s what everyone should know:
1. Prominent conservative websites published fake photos of Martin. Twitchy, a new website run by prominent conservative blogger Michelle Malkin, promoted a photo — purportedly from Martin’s Facebook page — that shows Martin in saggy pants and flipping the bird. The photo, which spread quickly on conse...

A new National Journal/Heartland Monitor poll has found that the growing economy is bring the Obama coalition home as the president’s job approval rating has hit 51%.
Beneath the Allstate/National Journal/Heartland Monitor poll’s finding that President Obama’s job approval rating has reached 51% is evidence that the coalition of voters that powered the president to victory in 2008 is coming home to him again in 2012. Obama’s approval ratings with Independents (49% in 2012 versus 52% in 2008), non-whites (76% in 2012 versus 80% in 2008), college educated white women (49% in 2012 versus 52% in 2008), and non-college educated white women (39% in 2012 versus 41% in 2008) are almost back to the levels that they were at on Election Day 2008. Obama’s approval rating is now higher in 2012 among H...

Let’s Play: Name That Candidate
This candidate is currently running for President in the 2012 GOP field.
Here are some of the things this candidate would like to do:
WARNING: The following list contains high levels of sarcasm.
Remove restrictions on drilling, so energy companies can drill wherever they want and screw up even more sensitive ecosystems.
Repeal the federal tax on gasoline and all of the crucial infrastructure programs it funds.
Lift government roadblocks to the use of coal and nuclear power so we can enjoy more coal related deaths and leave ourselves open to disasters like Fukushima.
Eliminate the EPA. Polluters should answer directly to property owners in court for the damages they create because regular people have unlimited money and resources to pursue legal remedy in court.

To sort of borrow from a Sir Elton John song, “Empathy seems to be the hardest word”…For the GOP!
If forced to use one word to sum up what is likely the biggest difference between the right and left, I’d have to choose EMPATHY.
Speaking of empathy, I gained some interesting perspective from the season finale of the Showtime series “The Big C” starring Laura Linney. It’s a great show, following the life of a woman trying to win a battle with stage 4 melanoma, a terminal prognosis. During this second season she was encouraged by a clinical trial that shrunk her tumors. The season culminated with her soul-mate cancer friend (a gay male) dying in front of her eyes after dropping out of the same clinical trial she was in because it wasn’t helping. He was training to run a 26 mile marath...

“Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated…”
-Candidate Obama
I have to say that I am VERY pleasantly surprised by the NEW President / Candidate Obama. Like a phoenix, he has risen from the ashes, at least rhetorically. The above quote is quite famous and even though it didn’t come from President Obama I used it because I think it is an appropriate follow-up to my previous editorial titled, “Mourning The Death Of Candidate Obama”. In it, I pronounced Candidate Obama 2008 dead and outlined the disappointing differences between CANDIDATE Obama and the President we’ve seen in office since January 2009. Like many other Progressives, I have at times been VERY frustrated with Obama, sometimes yelling and ranting. I thought Candidate Obama was dead and we were doomed with President Obama...

Greetings Like-Minded Friends,
It’s official! Rick “Dumber Than Bush” Perry has kicked off his presidential campaign.
Now we get to hear about how extending prayer days to a national level will solve all of our country’s problems. Heck, why not? He was delusional enough to think it would help with the severe drought they’re experiencing in Texas. He declared a state day of prayer in April and now drought conditions are exponentially worse than they were then. Smooth move Ricky! I think God may have turned the channel on Texas. I’m sure the country can hardly wait to hear how he’s going to make prayer days ACTUAL policy. That should solidify his position in the election as King Dolt Of Texas.
If this week taught me anything, it’s that Iowa Republicans have been feverishly creating jobs –...

Is There Hope For The Middle Class?
What is your answer to this question?
Based on the stories I hear and the current economic struggles many of us are facing I think many of you might answer with a resounding “NO – there is no hope for the middle class!” and I can understand why there are so many losing hope. There are some days when it’s hard to be optimistic.
We’re seeing an all-out war being waged on the middle and working class of this country but it doesn’t stop there. Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid have also entered the conversation about cuts. Meanwhile, the top 2% are doing extraordinarily well, enjoying the lowest tax rates since the 1950’s and being fanaticially defended by the GOP at every turn.
In this corner…Grandma, Union workers, Teachers, Policemen, Firefighters, Disabled People and the working p...

By now I’m sure you’re sick and tired of hearing about the debt ceiling, I know I sure am. Never before has this ho-hum matter-of-fact government function been in the public eye like it is this time, namely due to the moronic and radical idiot-logs called the Teabaggers. I will end the debt ceiling portion of this entry by telling you what I would have done, or would still do, if I were President Obama. Back when this debate was just a blip on the political radar screen and the first sign of trouble arose I would have addressed the Congress in a private meeting to let everyone know that any vote to raise the debt ceiling must be a clean vote. Anything else would meet the veto pen. If that warning was not heeded, I would then inform them that as a failsafe, the 14th amendment of the Constit...

President Obama addressed the nation this evening concerning the ho-hum debt ceiling debate turned crisis by the Teabaggers. Although he didn't give it to the Republicants with both barrels, he did a better job than I expected. I'm still perplexed as to why he didn't just get up there and explain that after trying to bend over backwards, he was just thru trying to negotiate with the dipstick of the house John Boehner. He should have outlined the 14th amendment invocation as a possibility to really get some people worried then, as a consequence of no possibility of compromise, demand a clean bill on his desk within the next 3 days. Instead he gave Boehner a free pass once again, inexplicably.Overall, the President gave a good speech. He actually called out those responsible and targeted bla...

Obama Living In No Man's Land
Greetings Progressive friends!
Let me start by re-defining the term No Man’s Land for the purposes of this entry. When referencing Obama I think of No Man’s land as the place between sanity and La-la land. The Democrats would be sanity and the Teabaggers La-la land. Now that we have that out of the way, I’ll get on with it:
I am a supporter of President Obama (may be past tense soon) but I find myself becoming increasingly frustrated with him as of late. It’s to the point now that I’ve started a petition and campaign to get Bernie Sanders to run for President in 2012. Let’s do a quick comparison of the two: Bernie Sanders stands for every Progressive, middle and working class person and value in this country. He fights for the little guy and makes no bones about how he feels. He’s not as...

My Radio Debut
Top O' The Day To You All,
Saturday, July 23rd marked my radio debut. I have to say it was quite an honor to be on Ring Of Fire Radio and interviewed by Mike Pappantonio, one of my favorite Progressive champions and a man that I admire greatly. His appearances on the Ed Schultz Show during the BP oil spill were magnificent. He fills in admirably on Ed Schultz's radio show and he always takes it to the misinformation mongers on the right. By all rights, Mike could have taken the heartless, soul-less route that many attorneys have and just practiced law for the money but he didn’t. No, Mike has championed many wonderful causes and made a career out of standing up for the little guy. A true fighter for the middle and working class of this country, my hat’s off to you Pap!
We didn’t get much...

Some interesting history on the deficit and job creation...
Do you know what the entire national debt was the first 200 years of our country? $900 billion!
Then came 12 years of Reagan and George HW Bush and it suddenly became $4.1 Trillion because of unprecedented DEFICIT spending!! Then came Bill Clinton who improved it every year until it became a record surplus, but not a single Republican vote on his first budget that cut the $250 billion annual deficit in half! Hmmm...
23 million jobs created during those eight years of the Clinton Administration. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 350%. We had budget surpluses as far as the eye could see. Social Security was fine for the foreseeable future and trickle down Reaganomics was nowhere to be found! Total debt: about $5.4 Tri...

Death Panels really do exist!
Sarah Palin was right. Ok, I'll wait for you to stop laughing. Ready to continue?
Death Panels really do exist but not in President Obama's Health Care Reform act.
Where they exist is in the Paul Ryan 2012 Budget, the latest attempt to dumb down the conversation. I find it amusing how the FOP (Fake Outrage Party) has adopted the Jedi Mind Trick as a doctrine. How else can you justify the way they're explaining their proposed destruction of Medicare and the deaths that will surely follow?
Simple mathematics starkly illustrate just how reprehensible and morally repulsive this budget would be. If a senior on Medicare receives a voucher for $15,000 (which is basically a gift card to the private insurance store) and their health care costs exceed this amount, they're on the hook f...

Deficit Reduction CBO Style!
Senator Tom Coburn was on the Ed Show on Monday night (04/18/11) and talked about how Obama's deficit reduction plan "isn't even close" to Paul Ryan and the FOP's (Fake Outrage Party) budget in terms of deficit reduction. What an idiot. Why can't these guys ever stay rooted in facts and how stupid do they think we are?
Uh, HELLO!!! The President's latest deficit reduction plan will cut the deficit by 4 TRILLION dollars over the next 10 years while Paul Ryan's plan will cut the deficit by 4.4 TRILLION over the same time period. How is that not close?
The Paul Ryan budget is the latest assault on the New Deal and working class Americans. The day after President Obama's deficit reduction speech (04/13/2011), Paul Ryan has the gall to speak out against the speech as partisan (huh?) and then ...
